Blog Tour – ‘Gone to Ground’ by Rachel Amphlett ~ #damppebblesblogtours @RachelAmphlett

‘Gone to Ground’, the sixth book in the Detective Kay Hunter series, was published in paperback and as an eBook by Saxon Publishing on the 8th July 2018.  I am delighted to be taking part in this blog tour and would like to thank Emma Welton of Damppebbles Blog Tours for inviting me to participate.  I have been thoroughly enjoying the Kay Hunter series, though admittedly am a bit behind with it at the moment.

I have a guest post and a giveaway for all of you today.  But first, I am sure you are dying to know what ‘Gone to Ground’ is about.

Book Blurb

While attending a crime scene on the outskirts of Maidstone, DI Kay Hunter makes a shocking discovery.

The victim has been brutally cut to pieces, his identity unknown.

When more body parts start turning up in the Kentish countryside, Kay realises the disturbing truth – a serial killer is at large and must be stopped at all costs.

With no motive for the murders and a killer who has gone undetected until now, Kay and her team of detectives must work fast to calm a terrified local population.

When a third victim is found, her investigation grows even more complicated.

As she begins to expose a dark underbelly to the county town, Kay and her team are pulled into a web of jealousy and intrigue that, if left unchecked, will soon claim another life.

Guest Post

Getting to know Kay Hunter: on location in Kent

In the lead-up to publication day for book six in the Detective Kay Hunter series, Gone to Ground, I ended up back in the UK for a few weeks.

In mid-May, I attended CrimeFest in Bristol where, two years ago, I’d been a delegate on the Indie Alternative panel. It was great to catch up with friends and hear writing heroes chat about their new books over the four days, as well as support fellow indies who were ably moderated by hostess extraordinaire, Zoe Sharp. Then there were the opportunities to meet people for the first time who I’d only previously corresponded with on social media, and a lot of laughter ensued.

There’s something very special about the crime fiction community – despite the fact we kill people for a living 🙂

Towards the end of my UK trip, I had the opportunity to spend a week in Kay Hunter’s stomping ground – Maidstone, Kent. Although I had commitments at author events, I was able to spend some time in between these visiting the locations that appear in the series and re-familiarise myself with Kay’s surroundings.

Whether it was visiting our old local pub in Weavering or mooching along by the riverbank where I imagine Kay and Barnes escape from the mania of the busy incident room, I felt a renewed energy for the series, and an excitement borne from new ideas that began to form as I took in all the sights of the county town and Kentish countryside – always with a notebook and camera to hand.

Sometimes, it was an overheard conversation that caught my imagination – I’d forgotten what the Maidstone accent sounds like – or watching people interact and thinking “what if?” and, of course, there are different scents and smells associated with a busy riverside town.

A lot of redevelopment work has taken place since I lived on the outskirts of Maidstone 13 years ago, but the familiar routes I remembered and captured within the first six books in the series remain and continue to inspire me.

Oh, and those traffic jams that the team have to fight through to get anywhere in a hurry?

Still there.

Competition

One lucky person has the chance to win a ‘Gone to Ground’ coffee mug.  To enter just leave a comment.

Terms and Conditions

This competition is open worldwide.

The closing date is 11:59 p.m. on the 16th July 2018.

The winner will be chosen at random and notified.  Their details will be passed on to Emma Welton.

Good luck! 🙂

Blog Tour – ‘Hell to Pay’ by Rachel Amphlett

It’s here at last! Yes, ‘Hell to Pay’ the fourth book in the Detective Kay Hunter series was published yesterday the 16th November 2017 in paperback and as an eBook by Saxon Publishing. Having thoroughly enjoyed this series so far I’m sure you can imagine my delight at being invited to take part in the blog tour for this book. I would like to thank the wonderful Emma Mitchell for organising this tour and Rachel Amphlett for the review copy.

A road traffic accident on a dark autumn night uncovers something rather shocking. Detective Sergeant Kay Hunter’s investigation exposes a ruthless serial killer who is exploiting vulnerable young women.

With her enemies unmasked and her career spiralling out of control, Kay’s determination to seek vengeance for the victims brings her dangerously close to those who want her silenced. Undeterred, she finally uncovers the real reason behind a plot to destroy her career.

Could Kay’s need for revenge be her undoing, or will she survive to see justice served?

Well, what can I say? I literally feel like I’ve been on a rollercoaster and only just got off it. ‘Hell to Pay’ was one absolute belter of a read. I have loved all the books in the series so far but this one has got to be my favourite. Rachel Amphlett really is a fantastic writer. With the short chapters and twists and turns she really keeps readers on the edge of their seat.

I thought this story to be particularly grisly but it didn’t stop me reading on. Through the authors descriptions I could picture the crime scenes. I’m just glad that I couldn’t smell them! The police obviously have to handle all sorts of cases, many of which are extremely unpleasant. I really felt for Kay and her colleagues coming across what they did. I like that the police officers were able to have a bit of banter despite this though. I guess it’s the only way to keep sane.

I liked the references made to previous cases throughout the story and I of course remembered them all. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened to Kay next with regards to solving who was trying to ruin her career. The discovery she made was a shocker.

This book can be read as a standalone. The author has really taken great care and attention to recap on the ongoing storyline involving Kay and has also introduced the police officers to her readers again. I do however recommend reading all the books in order as this is such a great series.

‘Hell to Pay’ is a gripping and exciting read. It will leave you wanting more. I hope there are more books in the series to come.

I give this book 5 out of 5.

‘Hell to Pay’ is being published on the 16th November 2017 by Saxon Publishing and will be available in paperback, as an eBook and in audiobook.  Here’s what it’s about.

Blog Tour – ‘One to Watch’ by Rachel Amphlett

‘One to Watch’, the third book in the Detective Kay Hunter series is out tomorrow the 6th June 2017, published by Saxon Publishing. I am absolutely thrilled to be participating in this blog tour. Read on for my review.

A teenage girl with virtually her whole life in front of her is murdered at a private party in the Kentish countryside, leaving Detective Kay Hunter and her colleagues shocked. The investigation into the murder uncovers a tangled web of dark secrets pointing to a history of greed and corruption within the tight-knit community.

As the list of suspects grows Kay must try and figure out who was responsible for killing the teenager, at the same time as trying to sort out her own issues after making a rather shocking discovery.

I loved the first two books in this series and was over the moon to discover that I wouldn’t have to wait long for the third. I could read Rachel Amphlett’s books all day. I found ‘One to Watch’ to be an extremely gripping read with lots of twists and turns. I was totally intrigued by this storyline and would never have guessed in a million years who the killer was.

As always it was lovely to meet some of the characters from the previous two books. It’s nice seeing how well they work together as a team. There were so many avenues to explore especially in this case. I really don’t like DCI Larch though. There is something about him and I can’t put my finger on it. He seems to have it in for Kay which is a pity as she is a really good detective. I keep hoping that he comes to his senses but I’d be surprised if that happens.

For some reason I thought that there would only be three books in the series, but in fact there is a fourth one coming out. I am dying to find out who is behind the personal vendetta against Kay and am hoping this comes to light very soon.

I’d like to thank Rachel Amphlett for another brilliant read and Emma Mitchell for doing an excellent job of organising this blog tour.

I give this book 5 out of 5.

Blog Tour – ‘Will to Live’ by Rachel Amphlett

Big congratulations to Rachel Amphlett whose new book, ‘Will to Live’, the second Detective Kay Hunter novel is out today.  Read on for my review.

When the driver of a packed commuter train sees a body on the track he is unable to stop in time. It looks like yet another suicide, but it soon becomes evident that there has been foul play and that in fact the victim has been murdered. As the investigation evolves a pattern emerges and more murders are uncovered. Detective Sergeant Kay Hunter realises that the railway’s recent reputation may be the work of a serial killer.

With a backlog of cold cases to investigate and attempts to uncover who is behind a professional vendetta against her, Kay must keep one step ahead of both the killer and her own enemies.

When a second murder takes place within a week of the first, Kay realises that the clock is ticking. The killer needs to be caught as soon as possible before anyone else dies.

I read ‘Scared to Death’ towards the end of last year when it came out and have really been looking forward to ‘Will to Live’. Well, all I can say is WOW! This was one thriller of a read and it was extremely hard to put down. It was so very exciting and fast paced and it had me trying to work out who the killer was.  I felt as if I was trying to solve a jigsaw puzzle. I just love Rachel Amphlett’s style of writing. The short chapters added to the intrigue and left me needing to know more.

It was so nice meeting some of the characters who were in the first book again. I can’t help liking Ian Barnes rather dry sense of humour. I think the team worked really well together in trying to solve this case.  I enjoyed reading about the police procedurals too which the author obviously did a lot of research for. I was also really interested in the continuing storyline with Kay. I have a hunch about who it could be but will have to wait a bit longer I guess to see if my suspicions are correct.

I’d like to thank Rachel Amphlett for a fantastic read and for not making me wait too long between books. I shall now wait with bated breath for the third book.

Crime fans, I really recommend that you check out this series. Whilst ‘Will to Live’ can be read as a standalone I personally think you should read ‘Scared to Death’ first.

I can see this series being on TV at some stage in the future.

I give this book 5 out of 5.
